Embark on a captivating adventure of art and culture with this delightful DIY pop-up card making craft designed for children. Inspired by the ancient Korean kingdom of Baekje, this craft transports kids into a world of royal splendor and historical intrigue. Through the creation of an intricate Baekje Crown pop-up card, they will not only develop their creativity but also gain valuable insights into Korean history and heritage.

From gathering materials to assembling the final masterpiece, this step-by-step guide offers a comprehensive roadmap for your young artists. Printable templates and detailed instructions make the process approachable for kids of all ages, while fascinating cultural tidbits enhance their learning experience.

Materials Required

  • Colored cardstock or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Pencil or pen
  • Printable template (provided below)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Print and Cut the Template

Start by downloading and printing the provided template onto cardstock or construction paper. Use sharp scissors to carefully cut out the crown shape and the rectangular base.

2. Fold the Rectangular Base

Take the rectangular base and fold it in half lengthwise. Then, unfold it and fold each short edge towards the center line, creating a valley fold on each side.

3. Attach the Crown

Apply glue or tape to the bottom edge of the crown shape and align it with the center of the folded rectangular base. Gently press down to secure.

4. Create the Pop-Up Effect

To create the pop-up effect, fold the rectangular base in half again, bringing the sides together. Open the card and fold the crown shape up towards the center. This will create a 90-degree angle and cause the crown to pop up when the card is opened.

5. Decorate the Crown

Encourage your child's creativity by allowing them to decorate the Baekje Crown as they wish. They can use markers, crayons, glitter, or any other embellishments to add their own personal touch.

Cultural Insights

As your kids engage in this craft, share these interesting cultural insights to broaden their understanding of Korean history and culture:

  • Baekje Kingdom was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which existed from 18 BC to 660 AD.
  • The Baekje Crown was a symbol of royal authority and power.
  • Korean pop-up cards, known as "jong-i," have a long tradition and are often used for special occasions.
