Andrew Artenstein was born in New York City in 1929. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1953 and then completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In 1957, Artenstein joined the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he began working on the development of a measles vaccine.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. Before the development of a vaccine, measles was a major killer of children. In the United States, measles caused an average of 500,000 cases and 500 deaths each year.
Artenstein's research team worked for several years to develop a safe and effective measles vaccine. They eventually succeeded in developing a vaccine that was 95% effective in preventing measles. The vaccine was licensed in the United States in 1963 and has since been used to vaccinate millions of children around the world.
Artenstein's work on the measles vaccine was a major breakthrough in the field of public health. The vaccine has saved millions of lives and has helped to make measles a rare disease in the United States.
In addition to his work on the measles vaccine, Artenstein also made significant contributions to the development of other vaccines, including the polio vaccine, the rubella vaccine, and the mumps vaccine. He was a pioneer in the field of vaccine development and his work has had a profound impact on the health of children around the world.
Vaccines: Biography of Andrew Artenstein is a fascinating account of the life and work of one of the most important figures in the history of vaccines. The book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the history of medicine or in the development of vaccines.
